Assistant Grower – Westbrook Greenhouses Ltd.
Westbrook Greenhouses Ltd. has two fully automated greenhouses with almost 1,000,000 square feet of combined greenhouse space. Westbrook is a large supplier of quality potted plants to the North American wholesale and retail mass market.
Job Summary
The Assistant Grower will ensure crop management/care activities are performed as needed to ensure plants finish on time to Westbrook specifications. This position will assist the Grower with crop decision making and interventions. Within the assigned section they will coordinate product flow and climate control. They will work directly with the Grower, Inventory Control Coordinator and the Plant Operations Manager to fulfill these responsibilities.
Key Responsabilities
- Performs crop care activities under the direction of the Grower to grow assigned crop to Westbrook specifications, on time and within pest tolerances, as per crop schedule provided by the Production Team;
- Communicates regularly with the Grower to provide information re: crop applications, irrigation needs, crop movement, and timing;
- Applies biologicals under the direction of the Grower;
- Operates spray booms, troubleshooting issues and performing minor maintenance activities as required;
- Performs spraying/drenching crops as required (Westbrook to provide Grower Pesticide Safety Course), and instructed by the Grower;
- Collaborates with team to resolve growing issues and takes required action to correct them;
- Operates greenhouse automation machines safely and effectively, troubleshooting issues as required;
- Ensure all growing activities in accordance with all relevant regulations (Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Labour, CFIA, etc.), maintaining all required documentation for internal and regulatory purposes;
- Records and reports waste to the Grower, providing information on causes of waste.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 year’s greenhouse experience or horticulture diploma/degree and 1 year greenhouse experience;
- Knowledge of greenhouse environmental control systems (preferably Argus) an asset;
- Grower Pesticide Safety Certification (or willing to obtain).

- Strong organization and time management skills with the ability to work independently as required;
- Good communication skills;
- Team attitude and willingness to seek guidance and collaborate to solve problems on a daily basis;
- Able to work in a professional and cooperative manner with co-workers and management;
- General knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Working Conditions
- Ability to stand 8+ hours per day;
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs occasionally;
- Ability to push 50-100 lbs frequently;
- Working in a cool/ warm, humid indoor environment with moderate noise level and around moving machinery;
- Working after-hours and weekends as required.
